Oviedo – 2017’s Hottest Orlando Neighborhood

Oviedo

Oviedo may be one of the Orlando area’s best-kept secrets. Many people don’t know about this suburb located northeast of downtown Orlando along Highway 417 but it’s actually home to about 34,000 residents. It’s part of the Orlando – Kissimmee – Stanford Metro area and it is known for historical homes and buildings as well as a plethora of chickens that seem to own the downtown area.
This a rural area has seen an influx in developments over the last 10 years and because it’s close to the University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Research Park, many people choose to live in this popular suburb. It’s also been known as one of the best places to live in the US by several national publications such as Family Circle and Money Magazine.

But what makes Oviedo so amazing?

Dating back to the 1860s, homesteaders settled along the shores of Lake Jesup and today, this thriving community, known as Oviedo has grown into a popular small town neighborhood. Whether it’s the farmers market every Saturday, airboat rides on the lake, or its close proximity and yet not too close to Orlando landmarks and hotspots, Oviedo certainly has our pick as one of the best places to live in the Orlando area.

According to several websites such as AreaVibes and Niche, Oviedo receives an A+ overall for public schools, housing, families, and diversity. It received a B and a B+ for crime and nightlife and is one of the safest places in the Orlando area. 79% of residents own their own homes and the median home value is between $200,000 and $250,000, very affordable for the Orlando area. The median rent is also somewhat affordable compared to other downtown Orlando places hovering around the $1300 mark.

Chickens?

One of its most unique attractions is its high population of chickens, yes, I said chickens. Let’s talk about that for a minute. These chickens roam the downtown area and there are so many of them that traffic often stops to let them, yes, I’m going to say it, “cross the road”. Chickens have been featured on T-shirts, coffee mugs and posters commemorating one of the areas yearly festivals The Taste of Oviedo. How do they get here? Well, because there are no specific laws or statutes surrounding the chickens, they keep populating and many residents feel that they add a sense of fun and uniqueness to their city. Of course, you are always going to get the ones that think they are a nuisance and a hassle, but usually, those people don’t move here. In addition to chickens, there are also wild peacocks, which roam the area as well.

Schools and Homes

Chickens aside, there are other great reasons to choose this as your next destination. Oviedo is part of the Seminole County public schools and there are seven elementary schools, three middle schools, three high schools and several private schools. All of the schools receive excellent scores by great schools.org as well as local teachers, parents, and staff.
