Davenport Homes for Sale
Welcome to Davenport Florida. This city and Polk County is home to about 3500 residents and while the city itself is very small, the area is experiencing explosive growth. It’s part of the Lakeland and Winter Haven Metro area.
Most of Davenport’s economy is centered on the Circus World amusement park, redeveloped in 1987 to the Boardwalk and Baseball including a minor-league baseball park attracting spring training and minor league baseball teams. This earned the city of Davenport the moniker “Baseball cap city” but the park failed in 1990 and the baseball city name is now extinct even though the area around the park has been redeveloped into Possner Park, a large outdoor shopping mall.
The city was established back in 1838 when the US military set up Ft. Davenport during the Second Seminole war. The settlement was first known as Horse Creek, for the creek first recorded on a U.S. Army survey in 1849 which flows past Ft. Davenport and enters Snell Creek and eventually Lake Hatchineaha and the Kissimmee River system. When the South Florida railroad open to station 1/2 mile north of Davenport and then replaced in 1926, as well as a second station from 1958 to 1986, it began to create more development and draw more settlers from the Orlando area.
